Today, Uber and Lyft, are causing the public to rethink how it approaches the idea of the taxi-cab. What about pilots? If you own or rent a plane, can you become your own independent mini-charter? Tread very carefully in this area as the rules about common carriage are very specific and you put your certificate and the safety of the general public in jeopardy.

Private pilots may not be compensated in any way for their role as a pilot. Even pilots with a commercial certificate are limited to accepting payment for only a very small number of operations. Every year, both private and commercial pilots run afoul of regulations by inadvertently doing something that can be interpreted as acting as an air carrier. Part 135 is the section of the Federal Aviation Regulations that oversees Air Carrier Operations, and as most pilots don’t want to get anywhere near it unless he or she is actually working for a Part 135 air carrier operation.

Air Transport Pilot and Check Airman Capt. Ben Taber will present some common ways that pilots may inadvertently cross the line, and expose themselves to harsh penalties.
