SCFC's Right Seat Workshops are designed for right-seat passengers. If you have a friend, relative, or spouse who flies with you, this seminar series is designed to give those right-seaters the opportunity to learn a little bit more about what is happening in the cockpit. Each session will familiarize participants with one area of flying so that they can be more knowledgeable about what is happening during the flight. Our workshops cover ground training but can be paired with in-flight training sessions on request. To enroll, call San Carlos Flight Center at (650) 946-1700 or use the sidebar to the right.
Session #1 - Radio Communication and Air Traffic Control
What is that secret language that pilots speak on the radio? To whom are they communicating with and why? What the heck are they trying to say? Join CFI Dan Dyer in Session#1 of the Co-Pilot Seminar Series for an introduction to radio communication and air traffic control from the perspective of non-pilots. We will begin the day with a training sessions on radio phraseology, and introduce you to the various people and talk back to us through the radio. After a fun group lunch, we will continue our talk with a review of the various uses of the radio and radio clearances. Finally, we will discuss the radio transponder and squawk codes. Throughout the seminar we will participate in group breakout sessions and exercises designed to help you become more familiar with the radio procedures and terms. This will be a fun, interactive introduction to radio communication in aviation. No prior training required. All newbies are welcome!
